Pollinator Decline 2000–2025: A Synthesis of Bee, Butterfly and Moth Trends

ABSTRACT

Context: Since 2000, concern over pollinator decline has shifted from local natural-history observation to a global research and policy issue. Findings: Evidence is strongest for losses in wild bees, butterflies and moths in temperate regions with long monitoring records. Declines are clearest among habitat specialists, large-bodied bumble bees, grassland butterflies and some nocturnal moth assemblages, while trends remain mixed where monitoring is sparse or where generalist species benefit from disturbed landscapes. Drivers act cumulatively: land-use change, agricultural intensification, pesticide exposure, climate warming, artificial light at night, pathogens and invasive species interact across life stages. Managed honey bee colony numbers do not offset declines in wild pollinator diversity. Implications: Pollinator decline threatens crop yield stability, wild-plant reproduction and food-web resilience. Effective responses require habitat restoration, pesticide risk reduction, climate adaptation, nocturnal-pollinator protection and sustained monitoring across under-sampled regions, especially the tropics and Global South.

Introduction

Pollinators are a functional group rather than a single taxonomic unit. Bees, butterflies and moths differ in ecology, mobility, diet breadth and exposure to stressors, yet they share a central role in moving pollen among flowering plants. Around three quarters of leading global food crops benefit to some degree from animal pollination, and many wild plants rely on insects for reproduction [1]. Since 2000, evidence of pollinator decline has accumulated from monitoring schemes, museum records, citizen science, targeted field surveys and experimental ecology.
