When Rain Becomes a Problem
A tomato can look perfect in the morning and split open by evening after a summer storm. Cracking is not a mystery pest or a sign that you failed. It is usually the plant’s response to rapid swings in water availability, especially after erratic rain.
When soil stays dry for several days, tomato skins toughen and fruit growth slows. Then, if more than 1 inch or 25 mm of rain falls in 24 hours, roots suddenly take up water fast. The fruit expands quicker than the skin can stretch, and the skin tears.
Two Kinds of Cracks
Tomato cracking usually shows up in two patterns:
- Radial cracks: splits that run from the stem down the sides of the fruit. These are often deeper and more likely to invite rot.
- Concentric cracks: circular rings around the stem end. These may heal over if weather turns dry, but they still shorten storage life.
Cracks are most common when fruit is nearly ripe. Large slicing tomatoes with thin skins are usually more vulnerable than cherry, paste, or thick-skinned varieties.
Climate Stress Makes It Worse
Erratic rainfall is becoming a bigger challenge for gardeners: longer dry spells, followed by heavier downpours. Tomatoes feel that whiplash clearly. A 5 to 7 day dry period followed by a soaking rain is a classic cracking setup.
Watch for these warning signs:
- Leaves wilting in afternoon heat, even if they recover by morning
- Soil pulling away from the edge of beds or containers
- Fruit swelling quickly after rain
- Fine cracks near the stem before full ripeness
- Forecasts calling for heavy rain after a hot, dry stretch
High heat adds pressure. When daytime temperatures stay above 90°F or 32°C, plants transpire heavily and soil moisture drops faster. Containers and raised beds can swing from dry to saturated in a single day.
How to Reduce Splitting
The goal is steady moisture, not soggy soil. Most tomatoes need about 1 to 1.5 inches or 25 to 38 mm of water per week, from rain and irrigation combined. In hot weather or containers, they may need more frequent watering in smaller amounts.
Practical steps help a lot:
- Water deeply before a predicted storm if soil is very dry. This reduces the sudden shock of rain.
- Add 2 to 3 inches of straw, shredded leaves, or compost mulch to slow evaporation.
- Use drip irrigation or a soaker hose instead of overhead watering.
- Check soil 2 to 3 inches down; water when it feels dry at that depth.
- Avoid heavy pruning that exposes fruit to sun and heat stress.
- Choose crack-resistant varieties when possible, especially in storm-prone regions.
Do not rely on extra calcium to fix cracking. Calcium helps with blossom end rot, but cracking is mainly a water-balance problem.
What to Do After a Storm
Harvest tomatoes at the breaker stage, when the first blush of color appears, if heavy rain is forecast. They will ripen indoors with better flavor than cracked fruit left outside too long.
After rain, pick cracked tomatoes quickly. Trim damaged areas and use sound portions right away in sauces, salsa, or roasting. Compost fruit that smells sour, leaks heavily, or shows mold. With steady watering and timely harvests, you can keep more of your crop intact even when the weather refuses to behave.
