Soil Color Field Guide
Your soil’s color can reveal drainage, fertility, heat stress, and salt risk before plants start to suffer.
Start with a fresh, moist sample
Soil color is one of the fastest field clues you have. Dig 4 to 6 inches down, moisten a handful, and look in natural light. Surface soil can be bleached by sun, stained by mulch, or crusted with fertilizer salts, so do not judge by the top dust alone.
Use color as an early warning system, then confirm with simple tests: pH, drainage, and organic matter if possible.
1. Dark brown to black: organic-rich soil
This color usually means high organic matter, good nutrient storage, and better drought buffering. It should smell earthy, not sour.
Watch for: soil that stays soggy more than 24 to 48 hours after rain. In humid heat, very dark beds can also hold too much moisture around roots.
Do this:
- Add compost lightly, about 1 inch per season, rather than piling it on.
- Mulch 2 inches deep to protect soil life during heat waves.
- If roots are yellowing in wet weather, improve drainage before adding fertilizer.
2. Medium brown: balanced loam
Medium brown soil often has a healthy mix of minerals, air, and organic matter. It is the color many gardeners hope for, but climate swings can still stress it.
Watch for: crusting after heavy rain, cracking in drought, or water running off instead of soaking in.
Do this:
- Water when the top 1 to 2 inches are dry for vegetables and annuals.
- Keep living roots in the soil with cover crops or dense planting.
- Avoid tilling when wet; if it forms a shiny ribbon in your hand, wait.
3. Tan or pale brown: sandy or low-carbon soil
Pale soils often drain quickly and warm early, which can help spring growth. The tradeoff is low water and nutrient holding capacity, especially during hotter summers.
Watch for: wilting by afternoon, pale leaves, and fertilizer that seems to disappear fast.
Do this:
- Add 1 to 2 inches of compost yearly.
- Mulch 2 to 3 inches deep, keeping mulch off stems.
- Water deeply when soil is dry 3 to 4 inches down, then let it breathe.
- Split fertilizer into smaller doses to reduce leaching.
4. Red or orange: iron-rich soil
Red and orange tones come from oxidized iron, often meaning good air movement in the soil. Many red soils are also clayey and can bake hard under drought.
Watch for: hard clods, slow seedling growth, and roots staying shallow.
Do this:
- Add organic matter on the surface; let worms and weather pull it down.
- Use mulch to prevent brick-like summer drying.
- If pH is below 5.5, consider lime only after a soil test.
5. Gray or blue-gray: waterlogged soil
Gray, blue, or greenish tones signal low oxygen. Roots need air; without it, they rot even when the plant looks thirsty.
Watch for: yellow leaves, black or brown roots, sour smell, and standing water after 24 hours.
Do this:
- Raise beds 8 to 12 inches in wet zones.
- Redirect roof or slope runoff.
- Pause irrigation until the soil is only slightly damp, not sticky.
- Choose water-tolerant plants where drainage cannot be fixed.
6. White, chalky, or crusted: alkaline or salty soil
White flecks may be lime; a white surface crust often means salts are rising as water evaporates. This is more common with drought, high evaporation, and repeated irrigation.
Watch for: leaf-edge burn, stunting, and yellow leaves with green veins.
Do this:
- Test pH and electrical conductivity.
- Leach salts only if drainage is good.
- Avoid overfertilizing.
- Mulch and use rainwater when possible.
Color will not tell the whole story, but it tells you where to look first.
