When hydrangea petals turn tan, crisp, or papery, many gardeners assume fungus, bad fertilizer, or a sudden plant failure. Often, it is petal scorch: a climate stress response showing up on the most delicate part of the plant.

Hydrangea sepals, the showy “petals” we admire, lose water quickly in hot, bright, windy weather. Once tissue dries past recovery, it browns. The shrub may still be healthy, but the bloom display has been pushed beyond its comfort zone.

What petal scorch looks like

Petal scorch usually appears during or just after a hot spell, especially when temperatures rise above 85°F, nights stay warm, or humidity drops below about 40%.

Look for these clues:

  • Tan, beige, or brown patches on petal edges or tips
  • Papery texture, not mushy or slimy
  • Damage strongest on the sun-facing side of the plant
  • Leaves may be slightly wilted but not heavily spotted
  • Blooms on outer stems are worse than shaded inner blooms

This differs from Botrytis blight, which often causes brown, water-soaked spots, gray fuzzy spores, and problems after cool, wet weather. Scorch is dry, crisp, and weather-linked.

Why gardeners misread it

Hydrangeas are often planted as if the old climate still applies: morning sun, afternoon shade, steady moisture. But many gardens now experience sharper heat spikes, hotter patios, drier winds, and warm nights that prevent plants from recovering.

Bigleaf and mountain hydrangeas are especially sensitive. Their roots are shallow, and their blooms can dehydrate faster than leaves. Reflected heat from siding, gravel, brick, fences, or driveways can raise the local temperature by several degrees. A hydrangea that thrived five years ago may now scorch in the same spot.

Container hydrangeas face the highest risk. Pots can heat quickly, and potting mix may dry in a single afternoon during windy weather.

Scorched petals will not turn blue, pink, or white again. Your goal is to reduce further stress and protect next growth.

  • Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry.
  • Aim for about 1 inch of water per week, more during heat waves.
  • Apply 2 to 3 inches of mulch, keeping it off the stems.
  • Move containers to bright shade before extreme heat.
  • Use 30% to 50% shade cloth during stretches above 90°F.
  • Water at soil level in the morning; avoid frequent misting.
  • Deadhead badly scorched blooms if they bother you.

Do not fertilize a stressed hydrangea during a heat wave. Extra salts can worsen water stress.

How to prevent it next season

Choose sites with morning sun and reliable afternoon shade, especially after 1 p.m. Keep plants away from reflective walls and pavement. In hotter regions, consider panicle hydrangeas for sunnier spots and reserve bigleaf types for protected microclimates.
